No Progress in the War against Boko Haram - EU

File Photo: President Muhammadu Buhari

January 20, 2020 | The Biafra Times

The European Parliament which is the legislative branch of the European Union (EU), recently suggested that the Nigerian Army and the government had not been telling citizens the whole truth about the fight against terrorism in Nigeria.

This followed the EU parliament’s claim that progress in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria has been stalled.

The army has often made Nigerians believe that Boko Haram and Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) were on the verge of being entirely wiped out in the country.

On several occasions, the army had told Nigerians that it was flushing out of the North-East, remnants of the insurgents.

The Nigerian government has maintained a similar stand on the fight against insurgency.

Both the army and the Nigerian government once declared that the terrorist groups had been “technically” defeated.

However, in its resolution of January 16, 2020, the EU parliament said contrary to what Nigerians were being led to believe, there had not been any progress in the war being staged against terrorism in Nigeria.

The EU parliament, condemning the recent attacks in Nigeria, including the slaughtering of 11 Christian captives in the North-East last Christmas, regretted that terror and other attacks in the country had worsened.

It reiterated its worries over the prolonged crisis in Nigeria and the precarious security condition in the North-East.

It also strongly condemned the frequent “violations of human rights, international and humanitarian law, whether based on religion or ethnicity.”

EU parliament “Condemns, in particular, the recent increase in violence against ethnic and religious communities, including the targeting of religious institutions and worshippers.”

It “deplores that progress has stalled in the fight against Boko Haram, ISWAP and the increased occurrence and severity of suicide attacks and direct attacks against military positions.”

The parliament “Urges the Nigerian authorities to guarantee respect for human rights in the country, and to protect the civilian population from terrorism and violence; insists that such efforts must be conducted in full accordance with respect for human rights and the rule of law, in line with the country’s international obligations.

“Considers any form of the extermination of human beings or ethnic cleansing barbaric and a crime against humanity; urges the Nigerian Government to address the root causes of violence by ensuring equal rights for all citizens and non-discrimination legislation; insists, in this regard, on the need to further promote inter-religious dialogue and the peaceful coexistence of citizens irrespective of their religion, engaging with all relevant stakeholders, including the Nigerian Inter-religious council.”

One of the promises President Muhammadu Buhari made to Nigerians when he came into power in 2015 was that he was going to defeat Boko Haram.

However, the terrorists have continued to exist more than four years after Buhari made the promise.

Stop spread of Boko Haram, UN, EU tell Nigerian Army chief

NOVERMBER 22, 2019 | THE BIAFRA TIMES

Olaleye Aluko

ABUJA - The United Nations and the European Union Special Representatives to West Africa and the Lake Chad Basin Commission on Wednesday met with the Chief of the Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, in Abuja, saying that the Boko Haram insurgents must be checkmated and their spread stopped.

The UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, and the EU Special Representative for the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin Commission, Angel Lusada, stated this during their visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja. They noted that their organisations would work together in the fight against terrorism in the North-East geopolitical zone.

The UN representative noted that the establishment of the Lake Chad Governors’ Forum was a welcome development and “part of a holistic approach which will focus on the root causes of insurgency.”

Chambas said, “One area of interest is the ongoing efforts to checkmate Boko Haram and stop its spread because of its affiliation to international terror groups. That is why it is incumbent on us all that we must see the fight against Boko Haram as a fight against international terrorism.

“We are all concerned and we believe that Boko Haram is a fight that we can win. That is why we are specially applauding the efforts of the army in dealing with the menace.

“We welcome the establishment of the Lake Chad Governors’ Forum which had its inaugural meeting in Maiduguri last year. We believe it is part of a holistic approach which will focus on the root causes of insurgency.”

Also speaking, the EU Representative, Lusada, noted that the union was committed to the Multinational Joint Task Force in the efforts to end Boko Haram and other terror groups in the Lake Chad Basin.

“There are many initiatives taking place and new ones coming up and this involves funding, but we want coordination. The crisis has become regional and can only be solved with regional partnerships. That is why we are meeting with stakeholders,” the EU chief said.

They Called Us Terrorists - Nnamdi Kanu Mocks Nigerian Government

September 12, 2019

By Nelson Ofokar Yagazie | Biafra Writers

The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has mocked Nigerian government over its designation of IPOB as terrorists. IPOB, profiled by United Nations as the most peaceful agitating group worldwide, was ridiculously labeled a terrorist organization by the draconian government of Nigeria in 2017. The fact that the group has never indulged itself in any violent act meant nothing to the ignoble government of Buhari who is now dead and impersonated by a Sudanese named Jubril Aminu Al-Sudani.

Speaking to a congregation of Biafrans that met him at EU headquarters in Brussels briefly after his meeting with some parliament members of European Union on Tuesday the 10th of September 2019, Kanu scorned the Nigerian State, wondering how a worldwide group that executes its activities in the open can possibly be tagged terrorists if not shear persecution by uncivilized lots like the brood of vipers running Nigerian government.

Pointing out the irrationality of the cabal running the current government of Nigerian, Kanu said, “they called us terrorists but today we are outside in the open.” It really stretches our sense of credulity how a person or a group of people legally carrying out protest marches in civilized countries can be referred to as terrorists by the Nigerian State that is still learning the tenets of democracy.

Drawing comparison between IPOB and its persecutors, Nigeria, Kanu said, “Jubril (the impostor currently occupying Nigeria's seat of power) cannot come here; Myetti Allah (the parent body of terrorist Fulani herdsmen) cannot come here. But IPOB is here.”

The comparison is well-drawn, for if IPOB designated as terrorists by the Nigerian State can be officially invited to a civilized gathering like the EU, it leaves little to the imagination how mentally deformed, barbaric and unsalvageable Nigeria and its handlers are.

Nothing Can Stop Us - Nnamdi Kanu Assures Followers

September 11, 2019

By Nelson Ofokar Yagazie | Biafra Writers

Addressing the teeming crowd that met him at the EU headquarters, Brussels, on Tuesday the 10th of September, 2019, after a vital meeting with members of European Union, the Supreme Leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, expressed indomitability in the quest to free Biafra. Celebrating victory over Nigeria government's subterfuge, Kanu who was all smiles said, "every effort made by the Zoo to frustrate our coming here today, we have destroyed it completely."

Of course, the Nigerian State has been in unwholesome business of undermining IPOB's efforts to restore Biafra, lobbying different governments and corporate bodies to forestall the Biafra quest. With Kanu's official visit to the EU however, the pendulum doesn't seem to be swinging their way any longer.

Reiterating Indefatigability, the charismatic Biafra leader said, “There is nothing our enemies can do to us.” Sure Biafra has numerous enemies, ranging from the Nigerian State which fears a breakaway Biafra will entrench untold hardship on what will be left of Nigeria since Nigeria's major source of income is the resources in Biafra land, to some Igbo politicians who, corrupt to the marrows, fear that a free state of Biafra will be their Waterloo, choosing thus to remain Hausa/Fulani slaves than seeing Biafra free.

Kanu seems to be making mincemeat of them all as his continued propagation of the message of Biafra restoration radically pierces the walls of major decision making bodies in the word. Judging from the achievements so far, the future seems so bright for Biafra, and as Kanu rightly pointed out, the enemy seems helpless.

We will Preach Biafra in White House – Nnamdi Kanu at EU Parliament

September 11, 2019

By Nelson Ofokar Yagazie | Biafra Writers

The Supreme Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday the 10th day of September 2019, honoured an invitation by some members of European Union parliament to address them on issues bordering on his agitation for Biafra and what a free state of Biafra holds for Africa and indeed the world in general. Also in appearance is Kanu’s deputy, Mazi Uche Mefor, IPOB’s Head of Finance, Lady Nnennaya Anya, and some other top officials of IPOB.

A huge number of Biafrans stormed the EU headquarters at Brussels from across all Europe to witness the event and cheer their leaders. Coming out from the meeting with the EU members, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his deputy, Mazi Uche Mefor, fell into the waiting hands of Biafrans whose joy is better seen than expressed. Caught in the euphoria, the IPOB leader at once addressed the crowd, making mockery of the Nigerian government. He said amidst smiles, “Every effort made by the Zoo to frustrate our coming here today, we have destroyed it completely.” The people cheered, happy that they have once again defeated the Nigerian government’s shenanigans.

Speaking further, Kanu who was in high spirit said, “The same way we have gone into this very parliament to preach Biafra, so shall we go to Washington to preach Biafra.” As in the time of Moses when the people stamped every declaration from Moses’ mouth with “Amen”, the jubilant crowd echoed, “Isee.” The word “isee” is an Igbo equivalent of amen.

Recall that while in the US a couple of months ago, Nnamdi Kanu in a town-hall meeting with Biafrans in Houston proposed a one-million man march in Washington DC come July 1st, 2020, adding that it will hand him an instant invitation to the White House. Considering the gathering momentum of IPOB, it all seems a done deal.

Further expressing optimism, Kanu said to the happy crowd, “I can assure you that after this very place, the next place is the United Nations.” The high spirited crowd stamped his words with “isee.” This, it can be said with all certainty, is not a good development to the Nigerian state which has done all within its power to stall the Biafra freedom quest. Freedom, however, is a fundamental human right to which Biafrans are entitled.

Biafra: Briefing for the European Parliament (FULL TEXT)

The Biafra Times | September 10, 2019

BIAFRA BRIEFING FOR THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

Nigeria in Crisis

There is a crisis in Nigeria. The Nigerian State has never been at peace with itself and recent events
amplify this pending emergency.

And, as has been the case since independence from Britain in 1960, Biafrans are the easy target of the
lack of a credible Nigerian state. Nigeria governs without the consent of all within its borders. Nigeria claims to be ruled by law, but in effect, there is a de facto lawlessness in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s epidemic of violence flowing from the North is well documented. In 2014 the Global Terrorism Index judged Fulani militants to be the fourth most deadly terror group in the world, behind Boko Haram, Isis, and the Taliban.

Lawlessness is always one step ahead of the Government. In response, the Government, when it is
convenient for it to do so, attempts to give a veneer of legality to the lawlessness. Recent proposed land reforms across Nigeria do just that. The Fulani herders from the North are increasingly encroaching on the settled farmers of the South/South East. This includes Biafra. As Amnesty International has reported, there were more than 2,000 deaths in 2018 linked to this land crisis. Instead of seeking to address the violence, the Government has sought to condone it and legitimise the land grab.

There is an underlying problem in the North which has to do with climate change and encroaching
desertification due to overgrazing and deforestation. This has drawn Fulani herdsmen further south and led to violence against Biafran farmers seeking to defend their land and crops. The fertile farming lands of Biafra are very attractive to the Fulani.

To address this land crisis, the Government, the President of which is Fulani, sought to establish the
RUGA scheme (an acronym for Rural Grazing Area – or is it, as some suggest, a Fulani word?) whereby Fulani herders could officially move into areas and absorb land as part of a Government co-ordinated programme across Nigeria.

Is this an attempt to develop settled land practices for the Fulani, or, as is the experience of Biafrans, is the drive behind RUGA an attempt to Fulanise (or Islamise) Biafraland and force out Biafrans? Biafrans who stand up to the Fulani are killed. Because of the uproar across Nigeria, the RUGA settlement programme has been suspended, but the National Livestock Transformation Plan (NLTP) remains in place. This programme advocates ranching. How different is it from RUGA? For Biafrans the effect is the same. They are forced from their land and will be killed if they do not make way for the Fulani.

Nigeria: The Problem, Not the Solution

Nigeria has always been a fiction. The state we now know as Nigeria was created for British
administrative and colonial convenience in 1914. An audacious move by the British, but no surprises in Empire. Britain’s Nigeria drew together disparate people into one entity.

To oversimplify, to the North are the Muslims. Two ethnic groups dominate the North, the Hausa and
Fulani. The Fulani are now in the ascendency. One hundred years ago these were semi-nomadic,
pastoral people. Many Fulani continues to live as herders. The South is mainly Christian and in the South East there is also a vibrant Jewish tradition. The rural communities in the South/South East tend to be settled, farmers. The principal ethnic group in the South is the Yoruba.

The South East is the region that makes up Biafraland or Biafra. There is a coherence to Biafra. Its
western border is the River Niger and it incorporates most of the Niger delta. The eastern border is
Cameroon. To the west, across the Niger, are the Yoruba. In the north are the Muslim people. Despite
colonisation and being forcibly absorbed into Nigeria, Biafrans are defined by common values and a
shared sense of identity. Biafrans don’t all speak the same language. Many Biafrans are Igbo speakers. Other Biafrans speak Urhobo-Isoko, Ijaw-Epie-Ogbia, Ogoni, Efik, Annang, Eket-, Oron-Ibibio, Ogoja, Ejagham, Igala, Idoma, Ibani, and Igbanke among others.

To put Biafra in its Nigerian geo-political context, Biafraland is made up of the following Provinces:
Rivers Province, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Bayelsa and Delta. Fulani herdsman have shown great interest in those provinces that form the central belt of Biafra, such as Enugu.

The Biafran War (1967-1970)

With independence, the persecution of Biafrans started. One colonial master was replaced by another,
although, and without endorsing British rule, Biafrans fared better under the British than they have
under Nigerian dominance.

First, the Biafrans who had been transplanted to the North by the British were massacred. Those that
survived fled back to Biafra. The oppression and intimidation did not cease. In 1967, Biafra was left with no choice but to proclaim independence. Nigeria declared war.

Biafra didn’t stand a chance. The conflict turned the Cold War on its head. The Soviet Union and Britain actively supported Nigeria. “Biafra, Britain’s Shame” was how many described the UK position. French compassion was gratefully received but it could do little to protect the fledgling state. America’s neutrality in effect backed Nigeria. China was silent. The UN was hopeless. Biafra was doomed. Starved into submission, after three years the Biafrans surrendered. At least 2 million Biafrans perished.

The atrocities, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed against Biafra during the Biafran War remain unaccounted for. Was it an attempt at genocide? Biafrans were considered an existential threat to the state. The killings were indiscriminate. All Biafrans were targeted.

Biafra Subjugated

After the war, Biafrans slowly rebuilt their world. But, as far as Nigeria was concerned, they were not
and never had been Biafrans. They were Nigerians from the South East or Igbo-speaking Nigerians. The Biafran War was airbrushed out of the Nigerian consciousness. Biafrans could only whisper about their loss. Joining the global Biafran diaspora was one option for those who could get out. Others remained in Biafraland, their Biafran identity amongst themselves, undiminished.

Nigeria continues to prioritise crushing assertions of Biafran identity. Even peacefully commemorating the War risks arrest, detention, prohibited ill-treatment or being shot.

In recent years the Nigerian state authorities have conducted three orchestrated campaigns against
Biafrans. The three Operation Python Dance campaigns have been battles against Biafrans. The first
campaign was in 2016, the second in 2017 and the third is ongoing. They are designed to undermine
calls for Biafran self-determination. Operation Python Dance campaigns intimidate. Serious and systemic human rights violations are carried out by state forces with impunity.

A Voice for Biafrans: The Indigenous People of Biafra

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) is the main organisation which represents all peoples who
consider themselves to be Biafran. IPOB has one principal purpose, IPOB calls for the recognition of the Biafran people’s right to self-determination. IPOB pursues the right to self-determination for Biafrans without the use of force. IPOB upholds human rights. IPOB rejects violence.

The Nigerian authorities target organisations calling for Biafran self-determination, most notably IPOB. Being found with IPOB symbols can result in an individual being disappeared. Arrest is inevitable. And now that IPOB has been proscribed, prison sentences are harsh.

The IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been targeted, harassed and persecuted by the authorities. He has been unlawfully detained, subjected to prohibited ill-treatment and unfair trials. It is a miracle that he’s alive. Following an attack on his home, he was forced into involuntary exile. Many of those defending him were killed or disappeared. There is still a warrant out for his arrest.

Biafrans, supported by IPOB, respond cannily to these targeted attacks organising stay-at-home days
each 30th May, the day Biafra declared independence in 1967. No one in Biafraland goes to work that
day and the economy, along with everything else, grinds to a halt. As Nigeria denies the human rights of Biafrans, the Biafrans become more skilled in honing those rights. IPOB remains committed to non-violent campaigning.

A Right to Self-Determination for Biafra

International law is clear in relation to self-determination. Where there is a credible claim for self-
determination the only way to resolve the issue is by holding a referendum which complies with
international standards. IPOB is calling for a referendum. It is for that reason the Nigerian authorities
have sought to brand IPOB as a terrorist organisation. The EU, the UK and the US have all rejected the labeling of IPOB as a terrorist group. They know that IPOB seeks only to uphold human rights.

Impunity for Northerners?

It is not only the direct attacks on Biafrans by the Nigerian state that perpetuate the intimidation and
torment of Biafrans. Nigeria’s policies of accommodating Northerners have a direct impact on Biafrans. No different to 1967, Northerners act with impunity in Biafraland.

The current land crisis in Biafra caused by Fulani herders is just one more chapter of brutality facing the Biafran people carried out with the tacit support of the Nigerian state. Despite the apparent suspension of RUGA, Northerners continue to threaten Southerners, including Biafrans. They will have no peace if Fulanis are not allowed to establish the RUGA scheme, the Fulani say.

This land crisis throws into sharp relief Nigeria’s crisis. The Government of Nigeria is, to all intents and purposes, giving land to Fulani herders from the North which belongs to Biafran farmers. These are the same Biafrans who legitimately claim their right to self-determination.

Biafran farmers live in fear. The farmers of Ebonyi and Enugu are particularly affected. This torment
must end. Biafra is entitled to resolve its own future and security.

Why Self-Determination Matters

IPOB has always called for creative solutions to recognise Biafrans’ right to self-determination. However, what is clear is that the existing model of the Nigerian constitution is fatally flawed. It continues to cause harm to all within the jurisdiction and it is unsustainable.

Nigeria may once have worked for the British as a colonial administration. It has never worked as an
independent state. To this extent, it is a failed state. Nigeria is an artificial vehicle which buttresses those with power, or aspirations for power. As there is no legitimacy to the state of Nigeria, there is no rule of law. Law is used as a tool of coercion by the authorities to crush opposition. Others, such as the Fulani herders, simply ignore the law and act with impunity.

Biafra: Africa’s Future

Biafran pleas for self-determination are ignored by the international community. Why are Biafran voices not heard? Resolving Biafra’s legitimate claim for self-determination will resolve Nigeria’s crisis. Biafra is a forgotten global crisis. IPOB believes that by resolving Biafra’s right to self-determination, Africa’s
peaceful future will be revealed. To that extent, Biafra is Africa’s future. The effects of Nigeria’s
permanent state of conflict resonates across the continent.

Biafra: Panic in Aso Rock as EU Invites Kanu

Photo: European Parliament

September 8, 2019

By Nelson Ofokar Yagazie | Biafra Writers

The persistent push of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, seems to be yielding results as European Union romances with the group. The EU, it has been gathered, has invited the leadership of IPOB to address them in its general assembly holding on September 10, 2019, over the group's quest for self-determination.

The leader of the group, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has since taken to his official twitter handle to announce his acceptance to the invitation and readiness to present to the EU the burning issues of the agitation and what a new Biafra holds for Africa.

Recall that the freedom-seeking group, IPOB, has staged a number of protests and awareness campaigns at the EU headquarters in Brussels. Leveraged by the ceaseless protest march the agitating group embarks on in different EU member countries, the Biafra quest, it seems, can no longer be ignored.

The Biafra quest is strengthened even further by the overt Islamization agenda ruthlessly pursued by the current Nigerian government. Europe doesn’t seem too comfortable with Arab-Islamic expansionism which, being brutal in nature, is an obvious threat to the free world. The idea of importing a Sudanese to impersonate late President Muhammadu Buhari and have him desecrate several international gatherings seems to has gotten to the nerve of several European MEPs who, taking all things into account, have decided to invite Kanu and his group to the EU general Assembly.

Aso Rock – Nigeria’s seat of power – is uneasy with the development, especially as it came on the heels of Agnes Callamard unpalatable report. Agnes Callamard – United Nations Special Rapporteur for Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions – recently came out with reports on the arbitrary killings of members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, by the Nigerian government.

IPOB, Aso Rock knows, has a compelling case against Nigeria, and with Kanu’s charisma and unmatched oratory power, the future doesn’t seem to hold much for Nigeria.

Genocide: IPOB place US, UN, EU, AU on notice over the silent genocide against Biafra people, by Nigerian Islamic army

August 1, 2019 || The Biafra Times

IPOB PRESS  RELEASE

We the global family of the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) condemn the incessant and illegal arrest of innocent people in Aba Abia State since Saturday 27th July, 2019 by Nigeria soldiers. If the ruling terror sponsoring Fulani cabal in Aso Rock headed by Abba Kyari thinks Nigerian Army can succeed in clearing the path for Miyetti Allah to conquer our land for their Fulani migrants from across the Sahel, then they are mistaken.

We are asking the United States ambassador to Nigeria, his British counterpart, EU representative and African Union to note the level of lawlessness being unleashed on peace loving Biafrans by men of the Nigeria Army. A combined force of the Nigerian Army, Police and other security outfits have started providing logistical, intelligence and ground offensive support for the advancing murderous Fulani herdsmen.  Nigerian Army formations in Biafraland have become in effect the advance guard of the invading Fulani terrorists. People are being kidnapped, summarily executed and detained without trial as a way of weakening our resolve in our avowed resistance against Aso Rock sponsored Islamisation agenda in the south.

We know the US mission to Nigeria, British High Commission and the rest will pretend they don't know what is happening but we encourage them to send a fact finding mission to Aba as a matter of urgency to gain a first hand knowledge of the silent genocide being committed by the Nigerian Army against innocent civilian Biafran populations.

If the United States embassy and British High Commission in Nigeria is part of this devilish Fulani ploy to destroy and conquer Biafraland they should let the world know rather than looking the other way as the brutal massacre of civilians continue unabated across Biafraland.

The unconstitutional and illegal arrest of Biafran citizens in Aba since last Saturday must stop. This same Nigerian Army that has failed woefully to fight Boko Haram or curb the activities of their fellow Fulani terror herdsmen are in Aba arresting people at Ehi Road by Kent, close to the shopping center. There they have been abducting dozens of innocent citizens and taking them to unknown locations. None of their victims has ever returned alive. Nigerian soldiers are in Aba terrorizing the residents for the benefit of their Fulanisation agenda. There is no war going on anywhere in Biafraland but every kilometer is Fulani army checkpoint. Civilized nations of the world must prevail upon the Abba Kyari led government of Nigeria and her Nigerian Army to disclose the whereabouts of those they abducted and where their dead bodies are.

The Nigerian Army arrested more than 50 people at a place known as Abia State Amalgamated Tricycle Operators Association (ASATOA) office in Aba along Kent Street. They equally arrested 25 people at Afor-Une in Umungasi and St Michael's Road Aba near NUJ office. It was a wicked sight according to the passers-by and eyewitnesses. The Fulani Islamic solders who were on this mission boasted and shouted that they will soon start arresting ladies and mothers that wear mini skirt or any form of short dress in Aba. They are in effect enforcing Islamic Sharia law in 100% Judeo-Christian Aba. Is it now the duty of an army to enforce the dress code of women in a supposed secular democracy?

We wish to place the United States Ambassador to Nigeria on notice that mass arrests and cold blooded execution of Biafrans going on in Aba is unacceptable. We duly expect him to notify the State Department in Washington about this ugly development. We know the British High Commission in Nigeria will always support any Fulani murderous expansionism against Biafrans but it will be prudent for the diplomatic community to understand that we will not allow this Nigerian Army of occupation to get continue to get away with murder. When we start the defense of our land  nobody should blame us.

Mainstream media in Nigeria should equally note what the Nigerian Army is doing in Aba for future reference because we shall resist this silent genocide in our land with all our might and when we do, they should always remember the Nigerian Army first started it.

With all these going on in Aba, we call on men and women of goodwill across the world to prevail upon the  Nigerian government of Fulani in Aso Rock and their Nigerian Army to release the dead bodies of those they arrested and executed on Saturday in Aba without further delay because they committed no crime.

Benjamin Madubugwu: IPOB lawyer writes EU, others, decries prolonged detention and denial of medical attention to his client

By Chukwuemeka Chimerue || Chief Editor, The Biafra Times

December 18, 2017

ABUJA— Head of legal team representing the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has petitioned the European Union Representative over the critical state of health and continued detention of Benjamin Madubugwu who is among the defendants facing trial along with the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu and three others at an Abuja High Court.

Ejiofor in the petition, protested that Madubugwu who was arrested since October 28, 2015 from his hometown in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State by operatives of State Security Services, SSS, on charges bordering on conspiracy to commit treason and unlawful possession of firearm, has been detained unjustly without any evidence or witness to prove his culpability in the registered offences.

He further stated that despite the court ruling on 17th October, 2017, by the presiding judge, Binta Nyako that his client be allowed access to a medical practitioner, it took the prison authority two weeks before they could comply with the order.

Part of the petition reads, “That our client was arrested on 28th day of October, 2015 from his home town in Ubuisiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State by the Operatives of the State Security Services in a Gestapo style operation and moved to Abuja, Nigeria Federal Capital Territory and consequently charged to court on a two count charge of conspiracy to commit treason and unlawful possession of fire Arm, charge for which the Federal Government of Nigeria has not called a single witness to prove since the date of arrest of our client till today.

“Your Excellency, on the 17th day of October, 2017, His lordship, Honorable Justice B. F. M. Nyako of the Federal High Court No. 3 sitting in Abuja ordered that our client be allowed access to a Medical Practitioner of his choice consequent upon which a Consultant General/Laparoscopic Surgeon attached to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi– Abuja was requested to see our client in prison. It took the prison authority two weeks before they could allow our client to see his doctor.”

In a statement revealing the medical report of Madubugwu of which copies was attached to the petition, it reads that Madubugwu after going through a thorough medical examination, is suffering from life threatening ailments which includes “three months history of recurrent painless rectal bleeding, a recurrent acute asthmatic attacks, a blood pressure of 160/100 MMHg, and a poorly controlled hypertensive asthmatic conditions.”

It further stated that the consultant Doctor further recommended an evaluation outside the prison with “colonoscopy/barium enema to ascertain the etiology of bleeding and subsequently have a definitive treatment.

“Despite this seemingly life threatening medical condition and the fact the we have filed a motion for our client’s bail to which we attached an affidavit of urgency as well as the medical report and a letter requesting for an urgent date to hear our application, the Federal Government and its team of lawyers chosed to attend conferences and seminars at the expense of the life of our client and the justice of the case.

“We have be labored your good self with the above details to equip you well enough to intervene on behalf of our client by all diplomatic means and to impress it on the Federal Government of Nigeria that only the living can stand trial as our courts have always held.

“We strongly believe that our client is allowed to die gradually because of the fact that he is an Igbo man and for daring to seek self determination in line with the constitution of Nigeria and the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.

“Your Excellency, it is important to note that while the Federal Government uses its influence, powers and authority to deny our client access to good medical attention, the individuals who constitutes the Federal Government visits your countries and enjoy your medical facilities. This is most unjust and we are convinced that your Government and people will frown at such attitude.

“The suit against our client has been adjourn consequently on two occasion due to the absence of the lawyers from the office of the Attorney General of the Federation thereby frustrating the hearing of our application on the need to release our client to attend to his health especially where our prison facilities could not handle his condition.

“Your kind intervention is solicited else our client may die before his trial.”
