There is an ongoing heavy gun battle between soldiers of 14 Brigades, Army Headquarters, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Barracks, Ohafia, and unknown gunmen in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State OHAFIA-TV News can reliably report.
According to our investigation on the development, our anonymous source said that the ugly incident took a bad turn when Nigeria Soldiers stormed Amangwu to arrest a man alleged to be a Native Doctor (Ngworo) that is friendly with the gunmen, unfortunately, the soldiers lost a man during an exchange with the Native Doctor’s bodyguards who put in a fierce gun battle, an action that attracted the wrought of the army.
Infuriated by the loss, the soldiers returned to their barracks, regrouped and descended on the community with carnage as never seen before in the peaceful communities of Ohafia.
Our source said that the return of the soldiers with intent to destroy caused further resistance from the Unknown Gunmen who had also regrouped to face the soldiers in an open battle that lasted from about 11:00 pm of Friday till around 5:00 am of Saturday the 12th of June, 2021 at which point the UGM returned to the bush while the soldiers paraded the community, unleashing mayhem on Civilians.
As at the time of filing this report, an unconfirmed report says that six soldiers and a member of the Unknown Gunmen have been reportedly killed in the melee.
Further information alleged that the army was given strict instruction to destabilize Ohafia as it was gradually becoming a stronghold of ESN, haven chased herdsmen away from all the forests in Ohafia, and hosting Biafra Flag on 30th May Heroes Day Celebration, an action the Nigeria government see as a threat that must be crushed.
We learned that the Army gave out instruction that the four stronghold communities of Ohafia must be destabilized to give a scare to the rest of the 26 Clans and the marked communities for attack and destruction by the Soldiers included Okon-Aku (The closest Neighbors to Amangwu), Amaekpu, Okagwe, and Akanu Ohafia respectively. We gathered that Amangwu was not on the list of communities marked for the attack, and wonder why the Nigeria Soldiers have descended on a peaceful community.
The villagers are calling on Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, Senate Chief Whip and other, State and National Assembly members to come to their aides.
A source who spoke on the condition of anonymity stated that many male youths in the community who feared being possibly whisked away by soldiers and other security agents have left their homes in the village for another place of safety in the state. He stated that the soldiers were going from house to house especially at Amangwu to arrest presumed ESN members after Unknown gunmen had dealt them a blow.
We gathered that few days back, the UGM attacked a military patrol team along Elu/Ebem road, sending the soldiers into panic as some of them escaped without their guns. The Barracks at Ebem has recently been under constant lock as businesses around the barracks has stopped forthwith. But in their usual fashion, the soldiers always have a way of taking their pound of flesh on the civilian populace whenever they loss a fight.
“We have suffered all manner of intimidation from soldiers. Some of our kinsmen have relocated to Uzuakoli, Umuahia, Aba and anywhere they think that is safer for them. We are in the village but our right to movement is determined by soldiers.
“Marriage ceremonies billed to take place any time soon have been shifted indefinitely. We learned that at Elu, soldiers went to the market and started pursuing people.
“A lot of houses have been burnt in Amangwu Ohafia community. They said that members of ESN were using the houses as their hideout; that I can’t validate. You need to call anyone from Amangwu to validate such claims. But what I can tell you right now is that Ohafia is on fire,” said the source.
An indigene of Amangwu Ohafia who spoke from his hideout confirmed the invasion of his community by soldiers of 14 Brigade, Ohafia with the claim that members of UGM that killed their personnel were ESN and are hiding in the Amangwu community.
We also confirmed reinforcement of soldiers and arms to the Ohafia Barracks for the purposes of carrying out this intimidation on Ohafians.
Meanwhile, we were reliably informed that the Nigeria Army has confirmed that the UGM’s location is in the EREI as they also parade Ohafia communities, inviting the soldiers to meet them in the bushes for a handshake while the soldiers preferred dealing with civilians in their homes. It is unclear whether war has been declared on Ohafia Clan by the Nigerian Government.
Army spokesman, Capt Dauda Illiya could not take calls placed to his mobile line, while the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna could not confirm the report.
According to Ogbonna, he is yet to be informed of such development in Ohafia LGA.
