Biafra: The Road To Freedom And The Path Filled With Blood; The Case Of Biafrans In West Africa

The Biafra Times | May 11, 2018

By Onoja Christian Obinna

Oh! How awesome is the Creator of the Universe that he placed every creature in a particular geographical location to serve the full purpose of their creation.

To some, he placed in the hinterland, some in the valley, some on the plain lands whereas some on the desert, still some, he made to occupy the mountains.

Despite the allotments, he ensured that he barricaded all the earth with a natural bulwark such as seas, mountains, and valleys that can't be altered in ease.

He made the hemispheres in such a manner that every one ought not to have conflict with its neighbours. He gave the inhabitants of each hemisphere a distinctive feature and way of life to differentiate one from the other so as to keep the universe at peace.

These he took time to arrange because he perfectly understands that mixing all the inhabitants of the earth together will spell doom to his purpose of creation but lo and behold, the British colonialists said otherwise thereby setting out an unending war and destruction of lives and properties in the western hemisphere of Africa (Nigeria) where they still maintain their colonial rule even after independence in 1960.

Prior to the assortment of the West African territories in 18th Century by the British colonialist Fredrick J. D. Lugard and the annexation of Lagos as a crown colony in 1861, in a bid to remain a Lord over the land and to expand their business interests all over the region now known as Nigeria, after conquering the north which was a separate territory from the south in 19th century. The south and north which had lived peacefully without any interference from each other since creation was amalgamated in 1914 as one entity but due to high cultural and religious differences amongst the duo, the amalgamation can best be described euphemistically as mixing of oil and water thereby leaving the country to wallow in its sorry state.

Since after the amalgamation of 1914, the South have done everything possible within their disposal to be accommodative to their northern counterpart, but it seems that the more the southerners try to keep Nigeria as a country, the more their blood is used to wash the alter of the country.

In 1967, few years after the independence of Nigeria in 1960, there ensued a war between the south which are predominantly Christians and the north which are mainly Muslims. The war was targeted on exterminating all the Christians of the south as there was a massive pogrom which engulfed over thirty thousand (30,000) lives of the southern people whom were residing in the northern (Kano) part of Nigeria.
Feeling insecure in the new nation after so many attempts to restore peace in the country failed woefully, the then people's general Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was left with no other option than to take a bold step to ensure the safety of his people who were entrapped, marginalized and killed on a daily basis by their northern counterpart and declared a separate entity called Biafra on 30th May 1967.

The defunct nation (Biafra) was matched down with war of aggression by the Nigerian state on 6th July 1967 barely three months after the birth of the new nation.

This singular act of the Nigerian state sponsored by the British government to forcefully kill the new nation (Biafra), necessitated the people of the South to stand in defense for their safe zone and stand up for their freedom.

As the war later came to an end on 15th January 1970 after over 3 million Biafrans, including women and children, were gruesomely massacred, using hunger as a weapon of warfare by the Nigerian government, a press statement of NO VICTOR, NO VANQUISHED was declared by General Yakubu Gowon, the then Nigeria military Head of State before the re-annexation of the carved out region of Biafra into Nigeria.

Barely 50 years after the civil war, the Nigerian government reverted back to high marginalization and killing of the southeastern people which propelled the youths to stand up for their freedom once again in a democratic manner under the umbrella of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) whose onus is to propel the Nigerian government to find a lasting solution to the incessant killing of the people of the old eastern region by their northern counterpart in Nigeria by allowing for a peaceful and democratic process of disintegrating the Nigerian state through referendum which will allow the people to choose their fate in Nigeria.

Sequel to the IPOB demand for freedom which the youths stood up for, the Nigerian government under the leadership of Rt. Gen Muhammadu Buhari have once again as it were during the war of 1967, matched against the desire of the people for freedom with bullets and war machines which have taken over five thousand lives of unarmed peaceful protesting youths of IPOB since August 2015-2018.

It is a known fact that since the amalgamation of the northern protectorate and the south which formed the Nigerian state, the southeastern people have been naturally saddled with the onus to keep the country one and have represented the country in an exceptional way to the outside world yet all they could receive in appreciation is brutal killing and destruction of the sources of their livelihood by their northern counterparts and the government yet the north wouldn't let go off them rather they prefer clinching unto them like a parasite that is prone to death when detached from its host.

It is worth commending the freedom fighters of this 21st century in Nigeria under the aegis of IPOB for despite been peaceful in all their activities and been gunned down by the Nigerian military and police forces respectively on each activity they embark upon to sensitize the people, they still remain resolute and undeterred. Your courage is being saluted all over the universe.

As the day to commemorate the sacrifices of our fallen heroes and heroines approaches, the world is still in anticipation of your high resoluteness as the blood they shed in Biafra are set to liberate the land of the rising sun in no distant time.

All hail the Land of the Rising Sun!
