EXTORTIONS ON THE HIGHWAYS BY NIGERIA ARMY AND POLICE:

EXTORTIONS ON THE HIGHWAYS BY NIGERIA ARMY AND POLICE

When Professor China Achebe wrote his book "The trouble with Nigeria" which he bared his mind on issues of tribalism, high rates of corruption, and the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War, the book couldn’t have come at a better time. It precisely explains the problems with the 23 years old Nigeria, (now 56+) and makes suggestions about how those problems could be solved.

The problems that Achebe discusses are tribalism, the false image of Nigeria as a nation, the Nigerian style of leadership, patriotism, the social injustice and the cult of mediocrity, indiscipline, corruption, and the Biafra which he tagged "Igbo problem" as if it is only the Igboes that are the people inhabiting the entire eastern region. Achebe's writing came at the time the leaders of Nigeria are charged with self-aggrandizement that has rocked the enclave for decades now.

But the surprising thing in Professor Achebe's book is that no Nigerian paid even an iota of heed to warnings he gave and things continued to become worse than any could imagine. The political class and the civil servants who are living big on Nigeria resources looked down on Achebe's words including those who throng Aso Rock for contracts. Virtually nobody, not even the human rights, and other NGOs raised a voice on the growing level of Nigeria's wildness until it came to the climax it is now.

Everything Achebe's book talked about is happening on a daily basis in Nigeria. Do we talk of tribalism? That has been the bane of the nation right from inception when a northern leader made a most horrible statement which turned to be the northern politicians standing order today. "The new nation called Nigeria shall be the vineyard of our founding father Usman Danfodio, the northern minorities as a willing tool... and other tribes as a conquered territories..."

The northern politicians have used that word as a standing order to politically overrun other bribes and regions. They see themselves aloof over other regions and carefully carved lion shares to themselves in everything about Nigeria. They have more states than other regions, their states have more local governments than other regions, and those local governments in the north produces more senators, and more house of representatives , and more local government chairmen, councillors, and more houses of Assembly more than any other region.

This simply means they have greater shares of the federal allocations and even oil blocks. They boast about it and barefacedly tramples the residues of other regions under feet as the dictate for them who will be their governor, senator or house of representative member. They go to every cranny of those regions and dominate them with their own party aspirants when none of those regions have their own parties or aspirants in the northern areas.

Have you ever heard there is APGA in Zamfara, Kano, Sokoto, Kebbi, etc? It will never happen because the political setting of Nigeria is virtually poisonous! And that's one of the things I believe Professor Achebe wrote about in his book. But the northerners are full of themselves and having a different political agenda they usually present to the unsuspecting public while they hold on to their secret devices. The north have been like that for decades now only that many people are just noticing it.

Being Islamic states, it is visibly forbidden in the Koran for a Muslim to adhere to the governmental rules of a non-Muslim. They consider it sacrilegious obeying non-Islamic rules being the reason Buhari does not obey court orders but still turn to the court to sue people and hire the same secular judges as a willing tool to do his Islamic bidding. There is gross tribalism in Nigeria that has since been incorporated into Nigeria politics. Followed by this briefly discussed, is the popular corruption practised in every government offices in Nigeria.

Corruption has eaten into Nigeria fabrics to the extent that Nigeria army , police, mobile police known as "mopol", FRSC, VIO and other uniform men like NDLEA, and Custom openly collects money from their victims without minding if anyone is looking at them. It is a common practice on Nigeria highways to see this sets of uniform men setting road blocks on the worst sports of the dilapidated roads collecting money brazenly from motorists and cyclists all in the name of offering security.

These people have contributed to worsening the poverty level of the masses as prices of transportation has deliberately been hiked by transporters to pacify the police and army demand on the road. One is prompted to ask if this type of thing is happening in any other African countries, or even in Europe. But the government is aware of it yet can not stop it because they are given proceeds from such horrible public extortions. That is the nature of Nigeria, where poor innocent masses who pays their taxes, reel under the burden of daily extortions by the army and police who have used that impermissible means to amass wealth for themselves when they are being paid by the government.

Greed in the military and police have become chronic that some members of the public who sees their activities as a normal way of life, now hires army or police to settle monetary, marriage, and even land matters instead of seeking redress in the law court. They have equally contributed to the destruction of Nigeria, and Nnamdi Kanu or IPOB whom they have tortured and imprisoned for crying foul to this evil practices already eating Nigeria fabrics to its oblivion. We are Biafran. We say no to corruption and extortions of Nigeria army and police in our land!
